Crossing Over

The sun pierced through the desert skies. The harsh rays pounded upon his back. His shirt was drenched in sweat. He hadn't showered in days. His mouth was parched pleading for water. All he saw ahead were sand dunes and heat waves rising from the ground. He couldn't walk no more. His feet wouldn't give. Lifeless bodies were piled around all dried up and wrinkled from the intense heat. Everything around seemed lifeless. Many thoughts ran through his head. He still had a long way to go. Was this really worth it? His life was on thin ice about to tilt over the wrong end. All he thought about was that he was almost there. To the border that split his life into a world of opportunity. A world he wanted to be in to be able to help his family out of poverty.

The journey to the land of opportunity started in Guatemala and crossed over to the Mexican border that split into opportunity and poverty. It was a month long journey. It was almost to an end. He was almost there. He was just a couple of miles away. He climbed into a train compartment with 30 other men. They were all cramped in there. They were about to close the door shut when my dad took off his belt quick and stuck it in the slot. They traveled for hours inside that compartment cramped with no space to move around. Their air was limited. Each person took turns breathing through the crease my dad's belt had left. Without that they would have all died suffocated. The trip finally ended. His stomach was aching with hunger. He hadn't eaten in days. The river that split this whole journey was right ahead. He was steps away. His heart pounded with excitement this was all worth it. The river was deep and full of impurities. The current was pulling strong, but he was almost there. He climbed into an old tire and paddled his way across. He almost fell of. The river was pulling him in. He was so close, but this could be the end. He struggled for his life. Finally he was able to escape the wrath of the raging river. He was on the other side. Finally, he was here. It had been a tedious journey that felt never-ending. A journey that almost took his life, but he had gone through it just to help his family. Many immigrants go through this perilous journey everyday looking for the land of opportunity.

Some people see crossing the border as something that many immigrants do to come to America illegally. Immigrants built up the United States from the very beginning. This country was, and continues to be a kaleidoscope of ethnic and cultural groups. They also consider illegal immigration a rapidly growing problem in the United States. Thousands upon thousands of illegal immigrants come into the country from countries all over the world. Illegal immigrants are considered a problem that affects the United States as a whole. How they cross and what they go through people do not really care or have much interest in it. They just care that they are here illegally and that they should go back where they came
