Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. is known worldwide as the leading revolutionary for the civil rights movement. He is a legendary man who fought for what he believed was right, and overcame many trials that made him. He was arrested, jailed, and discriminated against numerous times, yet he still succeeded to make a powerful impact on the face of racism and segregation. Today, thanks to the work of Dr. King, African Americans have more freedoms and rights.

The Civil Rights movement hit a big mark when on December 1, 1955 Rosa Parks refused to give up her seat on the bus for a white man. This simple refusal started a citywide boycott of the Montgomery bus systems which lasted for 382 days. It ended with a representation as a case in the Supreme Court. The event also started what would become a national movement to wipe out racial segregation and inequality. The brave men and women of the Civil Rights movement dedicated their lives to end slavery, segregation, and unfair treatment. Many other civil rights leaders included Rosa Parks, Frederick Douglas, Dred Scott, Homer Plessy, Malcom X, Marcus Garvey, and the most prominent, the civil rights movement leader, Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Martin Luther King Jr. was born on January 15, 1929. He attended a segregated public high school from which he graduated from at the age of fifteen. He received a Bachelors degree in 1948 from Morehouse College, a important institution of Atlanta from which both his father and grandfather had graduated. After three years of theological study at Crozer Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania where he was elected president of a predominantly white senior class, he was awarded another Bachelors Degree in 1951. With a association won at Crozer, he enrolled in graduate studies at Boston University, completing his residence for the doctorate in 1953 and receiving the degree in 1955. In Boston he met and married Coretta Scott, a young woman of uncommon intellectual and artistic attainments. Two sons and two daughters were born into the family.

Martin Luther King Jr. was a outstanding Civil Rights movement leader because he actively fought against segregation. He led many nonviolent protests and demonstrations for equality, such as the I Have a Dream speech that was delivered at Washington D.C., boycotts, marches, and peaceful rebellions. For his dedication to the African Americans, he won a Nobel Peace prize.

One of the most memorable attributes characterized with Dr. King is his famous I Have a Dream speech. "I have a dream that one day this nation will rise up and live out the true meaning of its creed: "We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal." Martin Luther King's speech will continue to go down in history. The spirit of his speech and the dreams he had and hoped to accomplish was transformed into every person that heard the speech.
