From the socioemotional perspective, discuss the issues that an individual may confront when planning for

Retirement is the most crucial phase of an individual's life. Retired people are often called 'young old', as they develop an uncertainty about their age identity. They do not want to feel old but the fact remains that they now fall in the category of 'elderly people' (Teuscher, 2003). The elderly people confront number of changes in their abilities and they often cope with these changes in a negative way.

The retirees have major socio emotional issues related to their identity and decision making. For most of the people who move towards retirement, the major challenge is the loss of work or professional life (Osborne, 2012). They often get involved in nostalgia, looking back and looking forward towards the last chapter of their lives. They feel down and depressed when they think about the unachieved goals of their lives. Some of the people often develop a feeling of loss of self-worth due to an end of their professional career.

Their daily active routine changes into inactivity. Activity adds color to life, so when they become inactive they start feeling bored and depressed. The time they spend in some hobby or interest might not give them that level of reward and meaningfulness, as they might have anticipated. They start expecting too much from their children and their grandchildren which often leads them towards disappointment. The financial issue also becomes the reason for socio emotional disturbances (Kail & Cavanaugh, 2010). The retirees can also have issues with their partner over the lifestyle or difference in their ideas which become more apparent in the later life.

Thus, keeping all these issues in mind, it's better to plan ahead of retirement for a more fulfilling and satisfied retirement life.
