New York Yankee pitcher Steve Howe, suspended from baseball five times because of drug and alcohol problems, was arrested on cocaine charges Thursday and jailed without bond, Flathead County Sheriff Jim Dupont said.

Dupont said that Howe was taken into custody in downtown Kalispell without incident during the afternoon and would remain in jail pending an appearance in justice court today. Howe, 33, lives in nearby Whitefish.

The sheriff said that Howe's arrest on a charge of felony possession of cocaine was related to a drug bust last weekend near Kalispell. One kilogram--2.2 pounds--of uncut cocaine was confiscated and seven people were arrested.

Howe was carrying less than one ounce of cocaine at the time of his arrest, Dupont said.

Dupont would not say specifically how Howe was allegedly involved in the weekend incident.

Yankee General Manager Gene Michael said from his home in New Jersey that he had been unaware of the arrest.

Commissioner Fay Vincent said from Greenwich, Conn.: "I'm heartbroken. This is terrible news. I'm totally surprised and shocked. It's really disturbing if it's true. If it's true, it's a great tragedy."

Howe successfully returned to the majors this season after a 3 1/2-year absence and was 3-1 with three saves and a 1.68 earned-run average for the Yankees. He struck out 34 in 48 1/3 innings.

When Howe was reinstated in early 1990, the commissioner's office said he would be banned if he tested positive again. He had undergone weekly drug tests since.
