Shower Thoughts

Expectation – n. a strong belief that something will happen or be the case.

Is it worth it?

Theoretically, if you keep your expectations low, you would never be disappointed. In fact you would be kept in a constant state of delight and surprise. Things would always be better than imagined (literally). Which, I suppose, would allow you be eternally happy. Theoretically, of course.

In reality, this would be a very difficult way to live. And rather sad too. Would you be living your life to the fullest? Or would you be settling for something that is far below what you could potentially have? Would you actually be happy or would it be a false feeling of happiness? Would you even know what happiness is?

Is this not man’s dream? “The pursuit of happiness”. We are continuously striving to achieve things, to own things, to make things, all in the name of happiness. If something as simple as releasing all your expectations results in infinite happiness, what are we working so hard for? Every person is well versed in the crushing disappointment that occurs when something falls below our expectations. If there is an alternative, why must we subject ourselves to such negative experiences?

But then, is it so wrong to want things? By having expectations and setting standards for yourself, you would have something to work towards, and having the experience of disappointment just pushes us harder. Isn’t that why humans have progressed so much through the years?

But, is it worth it?
