The problem of fear

* Prejudice/ignorance against blacks have been ingrained into Maycomb for hundreds of years

* Because of this, there is a class system of white > black

* Dolphus Raymond has to pretend to be a drunkard in order to show that society's class system can be broken. His drunkenness excuses his unacceptable actions of living among black people. Interview Dolphus Raymond.

* White society fears change in the status quo/hierarchy of white > black

* White society fears this change because they are used to their class system

* White society fears this change because they irrationally believe that blacks would rise to power when all blacks want is the right to be treated as equals

* White society fears this change because it would cause a loss in labour

* As Yoda, put it, "Fear leads to The Dark Side, or in this case, racism, injustice, harassment, and senseless killing. Fear makes people lash out against what scares them to restore the familiar class order, even if they have to destroy innocent lives along the way.

* In this case, fear leads to the death of Tom Robinson.

* Because white society fears this change, they are obliged to persecute Tom Robinson as he is a black.
