Technology can also be defined as "the branch of knowledge, which deals with the creation and use of technical mean. Today, when the word technology is mentioned one may relate it to computers or iPods. Technology is always going to change; new creations are built off of the knowledge gained from the creations formed before it. Somewhere down the line the simplest form of technology led to the creation of computers. Technology can be very helpful and make life easy, but it can also have a downfall when it is abuse or not use properly. For example video gaming technology, Kids all over the world put too much time on playing videos games than they do on studying or doing school work, which is having a big effect on the school systems. Product technology consists of new products and services designed by engineers.

We can easily compare the societies of pre-industrial, industrial, and post-industrial. Certain aspects prove the differences between them such as their game, pre-dominant activity, use of human labor, standard of living, structure, and their form of technology. Beginning with the earliest, pre-industrial, is characterized by the game, which is man against nature. Farming, agriculture and mining were their activities. Raw, muscle power was the only source of human labor. The society was based on a survival standard of living. Simple hand tools were created based on the knowledge they had at the time. Since man started using tools, technology shaped human society. Technology grew towards the advancement of machines.

The increase in computer power leaves organizations dependent on computer systems for operations and data accuracy. Today, it is hard to imagine daily life without a cell phone or easy access to the internet. There are several general ethical principles that should be considered when choosing a new technology. The Golden Rule suggests fairness stating, do unto others as you would have them do unto you. Basically saying that if everyone did this, could we survive? Descartes' Rule of Change says that if an action cannot be taken repeatedly, then it is not right to take at all.

When pursuing the advancement of a new technology, all risks and benefits should be analyzed, this process is known as technology strategy. Operational risks could be a disruption in operations, such as having to train employees how to use the new technology. Organizational risks may come about when there is a lack of commitment and new technologies are abandoned quickly. Environmental risks could arise due to political and social changes. In the workplace, technology is often used as a competitive weapon, but just as often, there is reluctance to integrating new technologies. From the human aspect, a fear of the unknown and a resistance to change is present.
