Competitor Profiling

The Mayo Clinic in Rochester initiated in 1889 as an outpatient facility in Rochester, and afterward became the world's initial incorporated group practice, an exemplar presently prevailing in America. Mayo progressed from the revolutionary practice founded by William Mayo, and his sons. The clinic practice medicine as an essential group of sympathetic, multi-disciplinary physicians, scientists, and other health professionals concentrating on the needs of consumers from the communities, counties, and the world. Mayo Clinic is recognized for ranking the highest of most certified eminence standard listings. For example, the clinic has ranked third on the US News and World Report of Best Hospitals for 20 years (Health US News, 2010). Mayo Clinic is associated with an array of treatment centers and hospitals acknowledged as Mayo Health System. These facilities are committed to serving various communities in Iowa, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. These locations offer subspecialty and clinical care, train residents, and execute fundamental and clinical research.

Mayo Clinic is motivated by its mission to encourage, hope, and contribute to health and wellness by providing the maximum care to every consumer through integrated clinical practice, education, and research. The clinic awards its earned operating profits back into programs that support the mission. In 2010, Mayo's net income from operating performance was $515 million that converts to 65% operating margin, and aligns with the clinic's long-term objectives (Mayo Clinic, 2010). The actions helped Mayo improve its operating performance to its highest level since 2004. The clinic invests its net operating income back into its research programs and health care initiatives.

Mayo's effective leadership, dynamic organizational customs, and a competitive essence of service excellence embedded in the organization have allowed the clinic to maintain its high brand reputation for many years. Mayo's culture of admiration may allow the organization to take in the hectic situations that occur when experts, and staff from diverse departments collaborate, and communicate better to serve each patient, and the cooperation among the diverse medical units within the clinic is a key competitive advantage. Mayo Clinic weakness may be its gradual process of moving from its conventional technology and product-focused status to one that embraces more value-added services and a broader consumer focus.

Mayo clinic personnel consist of more than 50,000 people including physicians, scientists, students, residents, and others. Mayo Clinic also assists over 50 communities in the Midwest through Mayo Clinic Health System, in addition to Mayo's graduate schools. Jointly, these sites care for over one million consumers each year. Mayo consistently communicates, employs for, and emphasizes the organization's core values.

The electronic medical record (EMR) is significant to Mayo's capacity to deliver health care quality, safety, and efficiency while reducing health care costs.
