Discrimination

To begin with I would like to say that I am proud of being a member of multinational community of dynamically developing country of Kazakhstan. Being an exchange student is not just an opportunity to share cultures, meet new friends, and improve your language skills but it is also a great way to see the differences in politics, economics, and in government. In my essay I would like to discuss the important social issue of discrimination.

Discrimination is a universal problem that is a said to have an "evolutionary basis". There has been discrimination since man has been on earth and history can attest to this. So many people are discriminated against, because of who they are or what they believe in and often because of stereotyping. People like immigrants, homosexuals, people of different races, nationalities and ethnic backgrounds, those that are disabled or handicapped and women, to name a few.

It is a well known fact that religious can be discriminated as well. The American-Islamic community became a major target of discrimination after September 11, 2001. Americans have felt uneasy and in danger when coming across a Muslim. Moreover, many Americans have come to the conclusion that every Muslim is a terrorist. As I live in a Muslim country and have a lot of Muslim friends, my point is that all Muslim people should not be judged because of one certain group of terrorists.

I was really lucky to come to the USA and even more blessed to attend the school, where the 90 per cent of students are African-Americans, as it helped me to comprehend and got acquainted with the African-American culture. Racism is a clear reality in modern society that affects all people. Racism continues to shatter and destroy lives.

Another cause of discrimination is stereotyping . Right now in the US there is bullying, where school age children are picking others who might be different which is causing not only physical and mental abuse. This also has caused even death.

Another example of national discrimination is the situation that happened in Kyrgyzstan this year. The nearest neighbor of my country, Kyrgyzstan, underwent difficult times of revolution, new parliament, and new constitution and still the situation is unstable. In the south of Kyrgyzstan, in Jalal-Abad the conflicts of ethnic violence have risen to its critical point. Kyrgyzstan has roughly 5 million people. The principal ethnic groups are the Kyrgyz (about 70 percent of the population), Russians (roughly 9 percent), and Uzbeks (about 15 percent). Uzbeks are concentrated in the south. For decades, these populations were locked in the grip of Soviet authoritarian rule, but after independence in 1991 the country became subject to local despotism and ethnic rivalries. Kazakhstan deeply sympathizes the citizens of Kyrgyzstan and is concerned about ongoing violence.
