Families that have only one child have become a growing trend in America. Perhaps it is because of the ever growing cost of raising a child or the increasing divorce rate. Despite the many reasons parents may choose to have only one child, they should seriously consider the alternative. The ideal family has more than one child because they produce happier and stronger children. Siblings help develop important skills in each other that will make them well rounded kids and better adjusted adults. Siblings also have the advantage of having a bond unlike any other bond a human can experience.

In developmental years, siblings provide social skills that only-child families cannot offer. At a very early age, children in the same household must learn how share everything from mom's attention to toys. They may fight with each other, but they also figure out how to resolve those fights, which is one of the most important skills a child can have when starting school. Siblings teach each other how to act in social situations by being a role model, and can be more effective than parents. For example, parents may tell their child to behave in church but watching big sister sit quietly and attentively is a much more powerful persuasion.

Siblings are given much more responsibility than only-children. Siblings often feel responsible for protecting or teaching each other. This responsibility also instills a sense of pride in children. Picture the smile on big brother's face after teaching baby brother how to tie his shoes. This natural self esteem booster cannot be recreated with an only child. In adulthood, these early lessons of responsibility will help with career and parenthood.

This describes the unique wonderful relationships of siblings. This is a relationship like no other because of the shared past. Relationships to other friends, no matter how close, cannot compare. Having a sibling(s) is the most rewarding and long lasting relationship a human can have. This special bond can outlast friendships and even marriages and is the primary reason families with more than one child produce happier and stronger children.

A sibling relationship is one with many rewards. From early on, children benefit from having a sibling by learning important skills that will help them throughout their lives. Siblings will always have a special relationship with each other that will enhance and shape their lives.
