Friends vs. Happy Endings

Friends was a very popular TV show that aired in 1994. It ran for 10 seasons. It was about 6 random friends that were living in New York City. They were Monica, Rachel, Candler, Phoebe, Joey, and Ross. They were in their 20s and it basically was about the challenges that you face in your twenties. Things like falling in love, getting a job, and apparently hanging out in a coffee house all day.

In 2011, Happy Endings aired. It is in its second season and it is doing very well. It is about six friends who live in Chicago. They are Penny, Dave, Alex, Jane, Max, and Brad. It has the same thing going for it. There are six friends in their twenties living life and changing life. They are dealing with all the things that you have to deal with on a day in day out basis.

When you look at this the first thing that you see is the black guy. Friends was an all white cast. Happy Endings not only has an African American as well as the interracial couple, Brad and Jane. When you dig a little deeper, you see the gay guy too, Max. This is a perfect example of what a difference a decade makes. The gay guy has no real style, he is a complete slob, and he is just plain disgusting. There is one similarity, the girl leaving the guy at the altar. In the premier of friends, Rachel leaves Barry (a secondary character at best) at the altar and joins the gang on her own. In Happy Endings, Alex leaves Dave at the altar. They are both friends with everyone before and after the incident.

From Friends: Phoebe was kind of dingy. She was a free spirit and proud of it though she grew into quite the stable gal in the end. Joey was a struggling actor who was too dumb to be realistic. Chandler used comedy to overcome his insecurities. Monica had to suffer from obsessive compulsive disorder. Ross's wife left him after discovering that she was a lesbian. All these characters were intertwined.

Ross is Monica's brother who is in love with Rachel and went to college with Chandler. Chandler is Joey's roommate who marries Monica. Monica and Rachel are high school friends. Phoebe was Monica's roommate until she was unable to bear her anymore and moved out. They still maintained their friendship.

From Happy Endings: Jane and Alex are sisters. Jane is very controlling. Alex is very creative. She runs a clothing shop. Alex was engaged to Dave until she decided that she couldn't get married and left him at the altar for a guy on roller skates. Dave decided that he needed to change his life and opened a sandwich truck shop. After he and Alex split, he moved in with Max. Max is a very slobby homosexual. He doesn't really have a job. In fact, in the last few episodes this year's season, he sold his beany baby collection, bought a limo, and gave fake tours of Chicago. Penny is a girl that is looking for love. She is career minded and knows how to have fun. She declared
