People:

William Berkeley- Governor of Virginia who was significant because he enacted friendly policies towards the Indians that led to Bacon's Rebellion in 1676.

Nathaniel Bacon- Bacon was a freed indentured servant who lead Bacon's Rebellion in 1676 which was significant to history because he drove Berkeley out of the colony, killed all the Indians, and burnt down Jamestown.

Events:

Leisler's Rebellion- This was a small revolt in New York that reflected class antagonism between landlords and merchants. It was important because it showed how the wealthier classes wanted to recreate the European social classes in the colonies.

Bacon's Rebellion- This was an uprising of Virginia farmers and indentured servants led by one himself, Nathaniel Bacon.The cause was Governor William Berkeley's refusal to protect backcountry settlers from Indian attacks, the rebellion eventually grew into a broader conflict between impoverished settlers and the planter elite. It affected history because it made the lordly planters have to find other servants to plant their crops which started the popularity of African slaves in the colonies.

Terms:

Indentured servitude- Indentured servant were people who were granted passage to the colonies in exchange for a fixd term of labor and they were important because they were the first slaves in our colonies.

Slave codes- These were codes adopted from Barbados, which made Africans and their children the property of their masters for life and they affected history because these strict rules made the slaves want their freedom even more and caused them to fight for it.

Civil war- There were many examples of civil war in the colonies, such as Bacon's Rebellion. These had an affect on history because they gave the colonists a sense of independence that led them to freedom from England.

Menial-This means lacking importance or dignity and it was a word used to describe the lower classes of colonial society such as the indentured servants and poor farmers who were important to history because they were the ones who fought for our independance.

Corporation- A group or institution granted legal rights to carry on certain specified activities. Corporations affected history because

Social structure- Social structure is the basic pattern of the distribution of status and wealth in a society. Colonial social structure affected history because people could mov up in ranks if they worked hard which outlined what it would be like now in America.

Headright System- This was the right of anyone who paid the passage of a laborer to acquire fifty acres of land. It was important because it motivated people to pay for indentured servants to get to the colonies.
