There are many appealing factors of basing a new or modern character on a famous one I admire. By doing so, I can recreate a new character with my pick of characteristics for the persona, while still using certain aspects that I like about the famous one. For example, if I were to also base a new character on Sherlock Holmes, I could create that character however I want. Just with a different name, a few changes in personalities and details ( creating ones that are very much alike Sherlock Holmes'), I would be able to make my own character based on him. That's exactly what David Shore did. David Shore used some of the basic personalities and information from the original Sherlock Holmes, changed it a bit, and created the new and modern Dr.House.

There are probably many reasons why the creator, David Shore, would want to mirror Dr.House with Sherlock Holmes. One would be that since Holmes was a detective and was known best for his detective skills, David Shore could easily create many mysteries ( except they would be medical conditioned mysteries in this case, instead of deadly crimes) for Dr. House to solve, just like Holmes. Also, Sherlock Holmes already had so much personality and information as a fictional character, David Shore only needed to change a few things to create his own personal character, Dr.House. Since many people love Sherlock Holmes and his mysteries, they would also like House and Dr.House because Dr.House is almost exactly like Holmes. Same ability for solving tough mysteries, personality traits, friends (James Wilson as Dr.House's friend, and James Watson as Sherlock Holmes friend), etc.

If I had to base a character of mine on character I read in a book, I would pick a character named L from a manga called Death Note. In Death Note, L is a detective trying to solve the mystery of Kira, who is an unknown killer. I would want to base my character off of him because of his personality and his abilities. L is very much like Sherlock Holmes and Dr.House, except for some aspects. L is calm, always alert, REALLY smart, and can deduce a whole lot of information from just one little clue, or sometimes, with no clue at all. These traits are all traits that make up L, and are traits that I admire a lot. Since I admire them, I would want to create my own character based off of them.
