Article #1

Title of Article: New H-P Desktop Acts Sort of like a Tablet(1)

Innovation: HP has released a new touch screen desktop PC that can act as a traditional desktop, tablet PC or be mounted on the wall like a flat screen television. The TouchSmart was released in February 2011 and is being marketed for its ease of use and is targeted towards a marketplace that is increasingly demanding touch screen technology. The innovation is, that it is the PC is the first all-in-one(as H-P calls it) touch screen personal computer. The TouchSmart can be an upright traditional desktop PC with keyboard, wall mounted flat screen TV or can be converted to a tablet by discarding the keyboard leaving just the touch screen. The touch screen is a self contained PC with all the inner workings of a traditional desktop behind the screen and TouchSmart tilts to a sixty degree angle allowing the PC monitor to become an easy to use touch screen tablet. H-P is also creating touch screen app store that comes with the PC without a subscription charge. The app store includes apps from Hulu, Netflix and Twitter.

Possible Threats/Opportunities to Dell: The new all-in-one HP tablet/PC is a threat to Dell. H-P which is number one is the PC market could potential distance its self further from its number one competitor. The TouchSmart retailing at $899.99 contains a 23 inch full 1080p screen, premium speakers and a wall mount on the back of the screen allowing users to mount it like a flat screen television. Its versatility is appealing to consumers who want a traditional desktop PC and a tablet but cannot afford both. H-P is also releasing a corporate version that may be successful amongst business people that need an office PC and a mobile PC for business travel. H-P currently holds 19% of the PC market to Dell's 12%, with the new TouchSmart, H-P is offering a new type of product to retail and businesses consumers that Dell does not. If the TouchSmart is a success it will allow H-P to differentiate its self from Dell in the PC market and potentially cause a loss in revenue and market share.
