LAB 1

EQUILIBRIUM OF FORCES FOR 3 POINT LOAD

INTRODUCTION

In this lab work, you must compare the calculated angle (theory) with measured angle (experiment).

OBJECTIVES

  1. To investigate the conditions required to achieve static equilibrium.
  2. To prove the force calculation method using geometrical method and resolution of forces method.
  3. To compare experimentally obtained results with theoretical calculations.

PART A: THEORETICAL WORK

TASK 1: FIND THE THEORIES

The theory related to this experiment are:

  1. Calculation of equilibrium of force using geometrical method which are triangle method and paralleogram law.
  2. Calculation of equilibrium of force using resolution of forces method.
  3. How to calculate random error and systematic error.

*Please refer to lecture note.

TASK 1: Write your related theory here

TASK 2: DRAW THE FREE BODY DIAGRAM[pic 2]

The experiment setup is shown as figure below. The weight m1 weight m2 is equal to 250g. Because of that, the angle  is equal to angle . Ignore the weight and friction at the pulleys and cord.Draw the FBD at point A in the box below.[pic 3][pic 4]

TASK 2: Draw your FBD here:

TASK 3: DERIVE THE EQUATIONS AND CALCULATE THE ANGELS

  1. Base on your FBD above, derive the equation to calculate angle  and angle  .[pic 7][pic 8]
  2. Report your data using table below. Start the load 3, m3 with 50g. Calculate for five different weight in increment order.

TASK 3: Derive your equation here

TASK 3: Record your calculations here

Load 3, m3 (g)

Angle 1, θ1 (°)

Angle 2, θ2 (°)

PART B: EXPERIMENTAL WORK

TASK 4: FIND THE EQUIPMENTS

1. LS-13101 Equilibrium of Forces Apparatus

2. Magnetic Pulley x 2

3. Magnetic protractor x 1

6. Weight hanger and set of weights (500g) x 3

TASK 5: RUNNING THE EXPERIMENT

  1. Position 2 magnetic pulleys 200mm away from each other in a horizontal line. Make sure the pulleys are perfectly aligned on the grid.
  2. Take a 400mm cord and tie both ends of the cord to 50g load hooks.
  3. Place the cord on the pulleys and level the two 50g weight hooks.
  4. Insert unit weights to both of the weight hooks until both weights become 250g. Record the load as m1 and m2.
  5. Place a 50g weight hook on the middle of the cord in between the 2 pulleys. Make sure the hook is in the middle of the 2 pulleys (100mm). Record this load as m3.
  6. Measure the angle θ1 and θ2 at the pulleys of m1 and m2 using a protractor respectively.
  7. Increase the load m3 to 100g and measure the angles θ1 and θ2 respectively.
  8. Repeat step 7 until the load m3 reaches 250g.
  9. Record all data and calculate the results.

TASK 6: RECORD THE MEASURED ANGLE

Record your data here

Load 1, m1 = ________

Load 2, m2 = ________

Load 3, m3 (g)

Angle 1, θ1 (°)

Angle 2, θ2 (°)

TASK 7: COMPARE THEORY VALUES WITH EXPERIMENT VALUES

Compare calculated values with the one measured from the experiment. Calculate the error between both result.

TASK 7: Show your calculation sample of error

TASK 7: Record your error analysis here

Load 3, m3 (g)

Angle 1, θ1 error (%)

Angle 2, θ2 error (%)

TASK 8: DISCUSSION

Base on the objectives, theoritcal values, experimental values and error calculation, please discuss:

  1. Your result in TASK 3, TASK 6 and TASK 7. What is the relation between theory and experiment.
  2. What do you experienced from this lab work.

TASK 8: Discussion 1

TASK 8: Discussion 2

TASK 9: CONCLUSION

Make a general statement from your result. Please refer to the objectives as a guide

TASK 9: Write your conclusion here
