In my vision, values are the fundamental canons of one's living; they can vary from person to person and help with understanding what has the most importance to anyone in their life. We usually learn our values from our own life experience, however everyone needs a starting point and usually our family members give as a basic list of values that we have to live by in our childhood. During our teenage years we start developing our unique personalities and thus thinking more and more about what is truly important to us. As soon as we subscribe to our main values, we start trying to live up to our own standards and sometimes this leads to a change in one's priorities and helps them understand themselves better.

In my experience, the first value I have learnt in my childhood was honesty. I was about seven years old and I did something that my parents were not happy about and they made me think through what I have done and why it was wrong. I then had to come up with the right things to say in order to be forgiven. It took me a few hours alone in my room to come up with a decent apology. I decided to keep it simple and honest and as it turned out, it was the right thing to do. I was forgiven and I have remembered that experience for the rest of my life, making honesty one of my main values along with love, courage and nobleness.

In general, there is always a certain motivation that drives people to move their lives in specific directions. Such motivation is defined by our personal values, our own 'truths' of life. These truths guide us into following our dreams and reaching our goals, determining us to move forward. Without values there would be no distinction between the good and the bad in the world and thus we would live in an absolute chaos that would make our living a purposeless existence. We could no longer be considered humans, as the only things driving us, would be our urges and blind passions, which are not enough in terms of achieving a balanced, purposeful and enjoyable life.
