News Station Donates to Political Campaigns

Do news organizations have the right to make political campaign contributions? I strongly feel that right contradicts any means of communication ethics and leads way for propagandist intelligence. I always felt it was the social responsibility of the press to give an unbiased, full account of the ongoing news. It seems today that there are no rules or guidelines amongst news stations for proper news coverage. This idea stemming from the recent donations made by news originations and their sub divisions to certain political campaigns.

Fox News' parent company, News Corporation, has come under fire for a recent 1 million dollar donation to the RGA ( Republican Governor's Association) which is directly affiliated with the G.O.P. All of this controversy resulted in a response from News Corporation's spokesperson Jack Horner. "News Corporation believes in the power of free markets, and the RGA's pro-business agenda supports our priorities at this most critical time for our economy." Most notably, every donation made is protected under the wings of the legal system. In mid January, the Supreme Court voted favorably to permit corporations and labor unions to directly spend money into political campaigns. It worries me how the special interest groups and their money tumultuously succeed over the public interest. It is clear that News Corporation has a special interest in the free market and money, and clearly stated, puts their priorities so, but to have the government and Supreme Court allow this type of special interest behavior is unacceptable. "Fair and Balanced" is no longer a reliable term for news, it has become unfair and malice. It is evident that news is becoming a source of special interest information, not balanced and accurate information. This is by and large partisan propaganda.

Don't think for one second that I am a liberal lefty bashing the right-wing corporate and media corruption. There have been donations made by multiple news sources to both democratic and republican parties. Most recently, in early November, Keith Olbermann of Msnbc has been suspended indefinitely for his personal political campaign donations to the Democratic Party. Olbermann acknowledged the donations in a statement to Politico, saying he gave the maximum legal donation of $2,400 to Arizona Reps. Raul Grijalva and Gabrielle Giffords and Kentucky Attorney General Jack Conway. NBC responded by publicly stating, "Anyone working for NBC News who takes part in civic or other outside activities may find that these activities jeopardize his or her standing as an impartial journalist because they may create the appearance of a conflict of interest," the NBC News policy reads. "Such activities may include participation in or contributions to political campaigns
