He was born to a Swiss father who he never met and his mother was a mexican native. his mother died when he was only 5 years old. when d Estrella was 16 he changed his name from De Rutte to d Estrella. he lived on the streets of Chinatown, avoiding his assigned guardians for four years. to get by d' Estrella would steal food and money, he often became friends with sailors and other people on the streets of Chinatown. to d' estrellas advantage the California school for the deaf opened on may 1st 1860n and soon d' Estrella escaped the dangers he faced being on the streets.
