The theme for the four novels is "people seeing the world in a different way." In the first novel, A Separate Peace, the constant fright of possibly being drafted for war was always there. Every day they would realize how little they had till that day of drafting would come. In another novel called Night, Eli's experience in the concentration camps was extremely scary. He realized how cruel people and the world could actually be. While at the camp, he lost all faith. In the novel The Kite Runner, after the Taliban took over Pakistan, everything was different. Everything Amir and Baba have ever known was taken away from them. In the last novel, Romeo and Juliet, they are completely head over heels about their secret romance. When they met for the first time, to them, the world around them stopped and they only focused on each other.

Although all four novels share the same theme, Night and A Separate Peace seem very comparable. For instance, both take place during World War II. All the characters share the same fright of dying and having to fight for their lives. Another comparison is that both novels are breath taking and keep you on your toes so you want to read more.

Despite their common theme, Romeo and Juliet and Night are very different in most ways. For example, in Romeo and Juliet, they die for each other because they can't be together. Love takes over their life completely and they barely even know each other. In Night, they are in concentration camps for months, weeks and years fighting for their lives. They become very greedy and kill or let loved ones die just for a bowl of soup. The carelessness of Romeo and Juliet is so irrelevant in comparison to the things the characters of Night had to experience and see.

Not only are the novels comparable and contrastable, they also have cause and effect relationships. For example, in Night, when Eli's father doesn't pay attention to the warnings of being taken to a concentration camp, they eventually get placed in the camps. Another example is in Romeo and Juliet, when Romeo's friends convince him to crash the Capulet's party; Juliet and Romeo meet and fall in love leading to much more drama further into the story. In The Kite Runner, since Amir stood and watched Hassan get raped, Amir has lived with the guilt of not doing anything to help Hassan for the rest of his life. Also in A Separate Peace, when Gene pushed Finny out of the tree it cause Finny to never be able to play sports again.

Overall, the four novels read throughout the year have many characteristics. They connect with their similarity of theme but also have many differences that make each novel unique. Another connection all the novels have is showing how each character matures and grows up. In each novel, all the characters have learned a new life lesson that helps them grow as a person and see the world in a different
