When America decided to enter World War II, the United States and their allies decided to fight the war in Europe first and to defeat Germany because Hitler was the greatest threat to the United States national security. To do this, they needed to first take control of places that Germany controlled in order to take away power from Germany. At first, the United States went to liberate North Africa from German control. Then the US invaded Italy and took control of Naples; nine months later, the US liberated Rome. One of the most important days in the war was June 6th 1944 also known as D-day, the day the US invaded Normandy. On December 16th 1944 the United States fought a battle in Belgium also known as Battle of the Bulge. Later, The US liberated France from the German control, then the US and Britain pressed forward to the Rhineland. On May 8th 1945 Germany surrendered to the US on what is also known as VE-Day. Even though this strategy was long and hard because of the geography of these places and because Germany's army was strong, in the end it proved to be effective because the US won the war against Germany.

The Second Front Controversy was the Soviets wanted the allies to create a second front in France as early as 1942. This would relieve pressure from Germany and save Russian lives. A total of 23 million Russians died in World War II.

Winston Churchill and Franklin D. Roosevelt decided to first liberate North Africa from German control. On November 1942, the United States landed in North Africa. The strategy of the British and Americans was to catch the Germans in a vise. The primary objective was to use ready Allied forces in an operation with current capabilities to put pressure on the Germans by creating another front. (World War II History Info). Other operations were to gain French Morocco, Algeria, and Tunisia as a base for enlisting the French Colonial Empire in the war to assist the British in destroying Axis forces threatening Egypt and Suez (World War II History Info). The Code name for this operation was Operation Torch (Eisenhower 71) The British under General Montgomery defeated the Germans under General Rommel in Egypt at the Battle of Al-Alamein (McGowen 45). The US army under General Patton defeated the Germans at the battle of Kasserine Pass (Carafano 63). In September of 1943, The United States invaded Italy and took control of Naples. Some of the most brutal fighting of the war took place in Italy (Mann 108).

Between September 1943 and June 2nd 1944 the Germans dug into Appenine Mountains (Monte Cassino). Then the US surprised the Germans with the Anizo Beach head landing on January 22nd, 1944 (Eisenhower 71). The Germans try to defend it and the US army is able to break through to Rome. On June 2nd 1944 Rome is liberated.
