Purpose: At the end of my speech, the audience will be able to count the sustainable technologies invested in Masdar city.

Preview: We must count the sustainable technologies invested in Masdar city.

Introduction:

The government of Abu Dhabi launched an ambitious plan to create what aims to be the largest sustainable city, Masdar City. The Arabic world Masdar means the source, the name was inspired because of the renewable technologies used in it. Masdar city is zero waste, zero carbon, and fossil fuel free. The goal of this design is the highest quality of life with the lowest environmental impact. To reduce electricity and water demand as much as possible, new technologies must be invented and modern mechanisms must be used. Solar Power systems define the city main source for electricity while recent inventories, such as the Electrical Powered Transit and Wind Tower, aim to reduce power consumption.

  1. One of the technologies that Masdar city rely on is Solar powered technologies

Solar powered technologies are machinery converting solar powers, such as sunlight or sun heat, into practical electricity.

  1. Photovoltaic (PV) Solar Power is a series of solar panels that renovate sunlight into direct electric current. This conversion into workable energy happens without the need for moving parts neither the need for dioxide carbon emission.

  1. Concentrated Solar Power (CSP) is a succession of lenses or mirrors that transforms solar thermal energy into heat, which drives a heat engine wired to an electrical generator resulting electricity. Masdar uses 2 main concentrated solar powers.
  1. Shames 1 is one type of concentrated solar power that Masdar city rely on. It is a combination of thermal parabolic mirrors with the purpose of concentrate the heat in a central tube.
  2. GemaSolar and Valle facilities use a central tower instead of a central tube consisting of a collection of reflectors. The converted heat is combines in a receiver at a tower heating to more than 500 degrees Celsius later transformed into electricity by a heat generator.

  1. Solar Power also presents the ability of using Electric-Powered Personal Rapid Transit vehicles.
  1. For transportation, Masdar city adopts an electrical powered transit vehicle. These vehicles are prohibited to be on the surface of the city therefore special underground tunnels connecting the city together is present. This transit can reach up to 40km/h as driving speed on their powered battery and it’s fully driverless. It works on a special system that navigates through the corridors occupied with onboard sensors used for obstacle detection.
  1. Masdar institute of Science and Technology put forward the most modern technologies on the planet to keep up the improvement of this city.
  1. Simple design but very effective in the streets of Masdar city. Wind towers consist of tall cylinders guiding the hot air coming from the ground upwards, replacing it by cool breezes coming from high altitude above buildings, and then finally regulating the louvers in proper direction to lead the cold breezes into the street level.
  2. Wind farms are a set of turbines that uses mechanical motions to produce energy. The mechanism is pretty simple; the wind pushes the turbine’s blades converting the spin into an electric energy though a wind generator. We can distinguish two types of wind power.
  1. Offshore wind powers are designed inside the sea water, for example Masdar’s London array and Dudgeon Wind Farm in the United Kingdom.
  2. While on the other hand, onshore wind powers are placed on land for example Masdar’s Port Victoria Wind Farm in the Seychelles and the Tafila Wind Farm in Jordan.
  1. Desalination is the process of removing some salt minerals from water for potable water usages. Masdar’s desalination technology is first of its kind for not using electricity as a source; however it uses only efficient renewable energy

Conclusion:

To sum up, eco friendly and green cities do exist; Masdar city offers the highest quality of life with the least environmental impact because it uses solar plants as electric sources and modern technologies such as Electrical power transit, Power and Wind Towers to sustain a healthy environment
