Construction jobs offer many opportunities such as building things or taking a sledgehammer to them, there probably is a construction job that would appeal to anyone. From highway construction, tunnel excavation, residential construction, commercial projects and demolition are just a few of the many positions that are available to people interested in these jobs. This job comes with distinctive working conditions form loading to unloading, to challenging heights or being exposed to hazardous materials. Whoever pursues a career in this field has to comprehend that they have to be prepared for anything that may go wrong.

There are two types of construction such as the laborers and specialists. It was found in the career and job search guide that the difference between the two is that a laborer works at every location where a building or structure is being built and has a range of duties. These kinds of construction workers help to build anything from bridges to homes. Usually these workers need to have experience, strength and training to complete tasks. However, some construction jobs can be very basic that require little skill or experience. Laborers are mainly responsible for preparing and cleaning sites that they’ll be working at. They remove any obstacles that would prevent concrete from smoothly being poured into that area. Many construction laborers will operate certain equipment such as machines that prepare cement and a stucco spray gun, which is used for plastering. The laborers are usually the workers that help carpenters, masons and other professional construction workers. Now construction specialists are specifically trained to handle certain equipment such as plaster mixers, hydraulic boring machines, jackhammers and other complex and heavy machines (Graves, 2015). These machines can be dangerous because if something goes wrong it can cause some serious injuries. For this position construction specialists are recommended to familiarize themselves with the equipment and technology they would be working with.

As a construction worker it is physically strenuous work since they do have to carry heavy loads and often have to twist their bodies to be able to access hard to reach areas. As stated in the article Construction Worker from the career and job search guide, a lot of workers have to work in areas that expose them to dangerous chemicals, fumes and noise that can cause damage to ones health. These workers have to be extra cautious and follow all safety rules whether it is in elevated platforms or underground construction projects. Many potential hazards for workers in construction implicate falls from elevated platforms, trench collapses, scaffold collapse, electric shock or failure to use equipment properly (Graves, 2015).

There are typically three skilled trades in construction, which comprise of carpenters, glaziers and mason that design and apply tasks. Construction work is a progressive occupation meaning that a lot of workers that start out as generalists that attend tasks such as digging ditches or even unloading equipment end up assisting specialists in roofing, structural work or pipefitting. (Graves, 2015). Later on, as general construction workers gain experience they will end up choosing a specific trade and undergo necessary training for that position. They can also pursue a bachelor’s degree to become a construction manager. Although there are many cons to this job such as injury, long working hours or even physical deformities however, some believe that the pay is worth it. Surprisingly, in 2013 the average salary for construction workers was found to be about $335,020. However, construction managers earned an average of $92,700 (Graves, 2015). Many people assume that construction is just a dead end job however; most people don’t understand that there is other opportunities such as general contracting or labor supervising that don’t involve the physical labor. In snag a job’s description it was determined that a few of the career paths construction can lead to is Electrician, HVAC technician, Plumber, Maintenance Worker and Forklift driver and these jobs average a salary roughly starting from $15 to 22 an hour.
