Explain how you would handle this situation if you were Charles Renfold.

If I was in this situation that Charles Renfold was faced with I would have listened to Darlene's concerns, I would inform the Darlene of the companies policy but that I would get back to her once he had a chance to look into the situation. Never at any point would I have taken the conversation to a personal level, even if Darlene did state "they should quit smoking" (Shaw, W. 2010. Business Ethics). When Charles Renfold made the statement "besides, it is easy for you, who's never smoked, to talk about quitting. I know, I used to smoke myself" (Shaw, W. 2010. Business Ethics). In my opinion Darlene could have taken this as a bias statement and could have become offended by the comment. After talking with Darlene I would have than went to the office in which the she was complaining about to get a first-hand observation of the smell and to see if there was anything that could have been immediately done to eliminate the smell. Once I had determined if there was an immediate fix that would remove the smell, I would have asked the smokers, Frank and Alice to please try and reframe from smoking in that area until the information needed for the report could be compiled and that I would get back to them with a resolution on the issue going forward. If I had received from resistance from the smoking employees Frank and Alice, I would have than made the decision to temporarily reassign the duties so that the smokers would compile the information and the non-smoker would go to an area without smoke and work on other duties. I would than advised Human Resources of the situation and what my temporary solution was and ask that they provide me with any information I needed to find a resolution. Once the information for my report was obtained and the report was turned in, I would than began to focus on a more permanent resolution to the problem. I would meet with both groups the smokers and the non-smokers to get their feedback. I would talk to other managers to see if they were having issues of this nature and if they were, what resolution did they come up with.

Describe the policy on smoking that you would recommend to Redwood Associates.

It is a known fact that second hand smoke can be harmful to those who do not smoke and no one should have to be subject to this if they do not want to be. "OSHA has made great strides in identifying potential health risks posed by the inhalation of firsthand and secondhand tobacco smoke in public and private locations." I believe that I would recommend that Redwood Associates make their building a smoke free environment. I would recommend that a designated smoking section be created outside of the building and that the employees are allowed to go to this area on their breaks to smoke. I would recommend that the Redwood Associates
