"Old Smoke"

Explain how you would handle this situation if you were Charles Renfold.

Charles Renfold is in a managerial position, which he is responsible to his employees, the mission of the company and to ensure a past-due report is completed right away. Charles Renford has a conflict that needs to be resolved today and has to come up with a long-term plan to ensure this does not happen or slow down production again and an employee who is refusing to perform because of a smoke odor workspace.

Mr. Redford must resolve this issue quickly, even though he must ensure he respect employees' rights, whether they smoke or not. The company follows the law and has an established policy that allows smoking and a smoke-free environment in the building. Darlene is not able to finish an important report for her employer because of the smoke odor.

Darlene has a problem with the smoking policy and has a moral right not to be subject to an open workspace where employees transport daily. Alice and Frank are respectful of the nonsmokers and go out of their way to ensure the odor and smoke is limited. If I were Mr. Renford I would resolve quickly this issue by providing a temporary work-space for Darlene to complete her necessary report.

After the report is complete, I would call Darlene to my office, and confidently state that the company understands her concerns and will have a policy in place soon that will benefit everyone. I would also firmly inform her of the attitude and in subornation she had carried on in Mr. Renford office earlier. Mr. Renford should state that this reaction will not be tolerated and disciplinary or written actions will be taken if it happens again. Inform Darlene of the correct actions she should have taken and hold an all employees training session on how to report company complaints. This would be only a temporary fix but should continue productivity in the work space until policy changes.

Describe the policy on smoking that you would recommend to Redwood Associates.

I would gather the firm's board members together, have a meeting and try to come up with a revise smoking policy. I would discover if there are certain spaces in the building or outside where only smokers can occupy and take smoke breaks throughout the day. These spaces would be identified as an area for smokers and all high-traffic work areas smoke free.

I would recommend that if the employees want to smoke the company would have a place designated for smoking in certain areas inside and outside the building. This way, the company would be fair to both the employees who smoke and those who do not smoke. "It is surprisingly in the year of 2012 that most states failed miserably in enacting proven policies and investing in vital prevention programs to reduce tobacco use"("American Lung Association," 2012) .

The only concern I see with the company's existing policy is that they have areas designated for smokers where everyone has to work daily. I understand the smokers try to cover up the odor but suppose I am trying to quit smoking, these vapors and odors will not help. If a company is concerned with employee's health or labor cost, there should be a healthy work environment message for all. Employers suffer tangible and intangible financial losses because
