Ho Chi Minh - great leader of Vietnam I admire the most

President Ho Chi Minh was born in Vietnam on May 18th in 1890. He is the father of the people of Vietnam as well as an outstanding leader of the proletarian revolutionary movement in Vietnam. He has devoted his whole life fighting for national freedom, prosperity, happiness of the people. It is unquestionable that Ho Chi Minh was one of the most influential contributors in the development of Vietnamese politics. He was a committed nationalist and communist whose main goal was to achieve a united and independent Vietnamese nation after decades of foreign occupation and oppression. This report will analyze the leadership of Ho Chi Minh which contributed greatly for independence of Vietnam country. Besides, some important leadership skills for the 21st century are also shown.


Motives and traits:

Possessing the core motives and traits is a precondition for any individual to become an effective leader. The core motives are drive and leadership motivation and the core traits are integrity/honesty and self-confidence. Other traits- originality, flexibility and charisma are related to effective leadership.

Motives: A motive is a want that moves a person to action. Uncle Ho's father was a strong Vietnamese nationalist who passed along to Ho a belief that Vietnam belonged to the Vietnamese. Ho Chi Minh's principle motive was the same of his father; independence and unity, and through this he gained the loyalty and respect from the people which his leadership demanded.

Effective leaders must want to lead. Leadership motivation involves the desire to influence others.


Integrity is defined as a correspondence between word and deed (Bennis and Nanus 1985) and honesty refers to being truthful and nondeceitful. Together they constitute the foundation of a trusting relationship between a leader and his followers.

He was willing to accept the challenges he faced, either by circumstance or by choice. Without exception or hesitation, he expressed confidence that he could work well with others and assemble a team to address whatever problems might lie ahead. Self-confident leaders are also more likely to be assertive and decisive, which helps them gain others' confidence in their decisions. This is crucial for the effective implementation of decision. Throughout, Ho was confident of victory. Mr. Ashmore and the late William C. Baggs, editor of The Miami News, were among the last Americans to talk with Ho at length when they visited Hanoi in early 1967. He told them: "You must know of our resolution. Not even your nuclear weapons would force us to surrender after so long and violent a struggle for the independence of our country."

An effective leader must be flexible enough to meet the challenges of the vigorous and rapid changes. Without flexibility, leaders may become set in their ways, isolated with fixed ideas and unable to adapt to changes in the environment and organization. Changing one's leadership style as the situation demands and being open to new knowledge and new ideas.

In addition, Ho Chi Minh is a charismatic leader. Charisma exerts its greatest impact during communications, especially when he is giving an inspirational speech to motivate Vietnamese people. He has an inordinate level of power and an emotional impact on his audience. He inspires the Vietnamese with the use of his political charisma. He uses this charismatic charm internationally and domestically. He projects the image of a simple, humble, and passionate old man who puts a great touch of wisdom in what he does. This is what helps grow around him a charismatic cult. Ho Chi Minh was a fervent democrat who shares the belief that the will of the people must always be served and allowed to prevail. To mention a quotation from Ho: "If people in an independent country do not enjoy happiness and freedom then independence has no meaning."

Knowledge, skills and ability:

Possessing even the four key characteristics alone is not enough. Effective leaders must also possess or acquire important knowledge, skills and abilities.

although possessing the key motives and traits does not by itself make an effective leader, those motives and traits can help an individual acquire the knowledge and skills necessary to formulate a leader's vision and implement it. Ability, too, especially cognitive ability, plays a vital role in leadership.

Knowledge: Uncle Ho's experience is the basis for his knowledge that can intellectually stimulate and broaden Vietnamese people's understanding of the country issues. He is an intelligent and brilliant person having lots of knowledge about society, polity, literature and so on. Especially,
