The causes of the Pueblo Revolt and The King Phillips war are basically the same. The wars are over Native Americans fighting for their freedom and their land. In comparing these two wars this essay will determine which war was more successful.

The causes for the Pueblos revolting were, the Spanish trying to take land and crops from the Pueblos also "they repressed many Pueblo religious ceremonies, banned liturgical practices, and punished those who continued to practice what the Spanish deemed sorcery."[1] The Pueblos were severely punished by not follow the rules of the Spanish, punishment for not following the rules of the Spanish was lashings, hanging, cutting off of limbs. The Spanish enforced more prohibitions such as "creating new bans on certain dances, destroying prayer sticks and masks, and seized altars and ceremonial chambers called kivas."[2] This caused the Pueblos to revolt and declaim war on the Spanish. One of the Pueblos leaders they called Pope was the driving force of the revolt. [3] Pope sent out leather thongs with knots in them, the knots indicated the numbers of day till the revolt would began. Pope found out that someone had told the Spanish about the revolt so he moved the attack ahead before the last knot in the thong. The date was August 10, 1680 when the revolt began. [4] Thousands of men were killed on both the Pueblo and Spanish side, but the Pueblos did not stop until they ran the Spanish out of Pueblo country. [5]

The King Phillips War was between the Wampanoag's and other Tribes against the English. King Phillip was not happy about the English taking land from the Native Americans and King Phillip did not like the laws of English. The conflict started on June 20, 1675. [6] The war ended in the summer of 1676 with the Native Americans surrendering do to no food and the capture of King Phillips wife and son and other Native Americans. King Phillip was killed in August of 1676 and his head was placed on a pike where it stayed for a number of years as a warning to other Native Americans who might think about going against the English. [7] "King Phillips war was one of the bloodiest wars in American history." [8]

The uprising with Pope against the Spanish was more successful because the Pueblos got their land back and ran the Spanish out of Pueblo country. The King Phillip War was bloody and the Native Americans and English lost a lot of their people, they also lost fields of crops, homes, and cattle in which they never recovered from.
