Les Miserables Reflection

Earlier today, my classmates and I went to go see Les Miserables. This movie was based off of The French Revolution and the lower class rebelling against the government. They fought for independence, equal rights and unification as a country.

There were many ways in which the movie is similar and different from the actual occurrence. For example, in the movie, the women were sold as prostitutes in order to make money for their families. Anne Hathaway, who plays Fantine, was forced to become a prostitute in order to support herself and her daughter. In the actual French Revolution, women joined men and were also part of the revolution. They had more of a say than portrayed in the film.

Another way that the film and the occurrence were different was the revolution planning. In the film, they only planned for a few weeks, and the government army knew about it. They met the rebels in a head to head battle, which seemed to be scheduled. In the actual occurrence, the revolution was at the spur of the moment. No one knew when it was coming and the government army was caught by surprise. This gave the rebels a better chance at making a stand and proving a point for their independence.

There were a lot of similarities in the film to the actual French Revolution. In both, the social classes were correctly portrayed. The lower estate was accurately

shown. Their facial expressions and physical appearance really brought it all together from what I had read in the textbook. There was much poverty and one could easily see the pain and agony that they were going through. On the other hand, the wealthy were very blessed and had much more privileges. However, there seemed to be no middle class. You only saw the poverty, and then the royalty.

Overall, this movie was a clearer understanding from what I had known before. This was a fantastic movie and certainty one to be remembered. Not only was it enjoyable to watch, but very informative. It cleared up so much for me and can teach someone so much about a key point in history.
