The Royal Canadian Mounted police (RCMP) (in french- Gendarmerie royale du Canada) was formed by gathering the Royal Northwest Mounted Police and the Dominion Police on February 1, 1920. The prime minister during that time was man name John A. Macdonald. He was the first to come up with the idea that Canada needs a strong police presence in the west. (the purpose) As Canada's national police force, the RCMP is primarily responsible for enforcing federal laws throughout Canada while general law and order including the enforcement of the Criminal Code and applicable provincial legislation The Royal Northwest Mounted Police was established in 1873 by a parliament of Canada and recruited about 150 people. According to Canadian history for kids, it said “Within the next ten years offices were established in Fort Macleod, Alberta, Ford Edmonton and Fort Pelly, Saskatchewan, Fort Calgary and Fort Walsh, Saskatchewan. By 1885, the number of men in the Force had grown to 1000. In 1886, Prime Minister Wilfrid Laurier tried to disband the Royal Northwest Mounted Police but support for the Force was too great. The RNWMP made history policing the Klondike Gold Rush.” (http://www.canadianhistoryforkids.com/canadian-history-for-kids-rcmp/) also according to History of the rcmp it said “By 1885, the Force had grown to 1,000 men, but in 1896 its future was threatened by the newly elected Prime Minister, Sir Wilfrid Laurier, who decided to reduce and eventually disband the NWMP. Support for the Force in the west prevailed, and it gained new prominence policing the Klondike Gold Rush” (http://www.rcmp-grc.gc.ca/en/history-rcmp)

In 1919, parliament joined the RNWMP and the headquarter was moved to Ottawa from the original place Regina. Currently the headquarter is located in M. J. Nadon Government of Canada Building. During the late 1930s the force had doubled. (Going from Alberta, Manitoba, New Brunswick, Nova Scotia and Prince Edward Island). Later the RCMP made a great impact that by 1974 women were first accepted as uniformed members. And RCMP motto was Maintiens le droit (Defend the law).
