As David McCullough once said, “Writing is thinking. To write well is to think clearly. That’s why it’s so hard”. In today’s generation many people struggle to write well because thinking is an arduous task. A majority reinforces the idea of writing and thinking are not meant to co- exist. However, these two activities intersect one another and are meant to co- exist in order to achieve effective writing.

Writing well is not a gift but a skill that can be learned by anyone.  In order for a person to write well one must be able to deliver a clear message to an audience, focus on it’s content, and time to practice. In all writings, the writer MUST have a clear and concise message to its audience. If the writer fails to have a clear message it will leave the audience with perplexing thoughts. Not only, does the writer need to focus on his/her message but also it’s content. Some writers tend to stray away from the main point of the topic or give irrelevant supporting details that diminish the value of the essay. Therefore, in order to avoid this, the writer needs to be able to give concrete examples that support the topic. Lastly, to write well, the writer needs to set aside time needed to practice writing, fix common mistakes, and be able to analyze and think critically to improve their writing skills.

Therefore, to think well means to use intelligence and be wise about a topic. One would need to analyze their thoughts, list down ideas, and expand the use of resources such as the library. In addition, I believe to think well, not only means to build on existing arguments but to create your own ideas’ and thoughts. For a person to be able to compose their own ideas means that they are open to different perspectives and not subjective to there own. Correspondingly, to think well means to be creative and go beyond one’s expectations using one’s intelligence.

Consequently, writing and thinking have a symbiotic relationship, both are meant to co-exist alongside with the other. A person needs to be able to express what they are thinking by communicating their thoughts and ideas through their style of writing. For example, before a person can write an essay, one would need to brainstorm ideas and form an outline. Therefore, without being able to analyze and critically think about the topic, it is impossible to write. Thus, when writing an essay it is important that he or she cite relevant examples either from personal experiences or through research. This process involves thinking about how to make the essay coherent and concise on presenting the information. Another way critical thinking is related to writing is when a writer goes through an editing process. In this process, the writer has to think about what details are the most important and what needs to be removed. After assessing for grammatical errors and its content, it provides a concise and coherent flow for the paper.
