In-N-Out first opened in 1948 by owner Harry Snyder in a 10 feet square drive-thru located at Francisquito and Garvey in Baldwin Park. Him and his wife ran the company, while he picked up the meat and produce daily from markets, she took care of the accounting. The original logo stated "In-N-Out Hamburgers, No Delay". The new logo was adopted to incorporate the meaning of "The Arrow Pointing to Pride". Many subtle things in the company changed that were a big deal to them back then. For example, the company went from using bottle drinks to fountain drinks. Not only that, but in 1961, the company decided to use plain paper as lap mats instead of brown wax paper. In 1965, a banner was hung for guests to try the new Double-Double. Later that year, it became a part of the official menu because of its popularity. A popular menu item we see nowadays is animal style. The first animal style burger was first ordered in 1969. This menu item has expanded to French fries as well. The founder of In-N-Outs favorite movie is It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad world which featured four palm trees in the shape of a W. Because In-N-Out in Harry's treasure, he has planted crossed palm trees in front of all In-N-Out stores and also has a picture of the original trees in every store.

In 1976, Harry Snyder passed away. His sons Rich and Guy Snyder took over as president and vice president. They continued to keep up the reputation of the 18 restaurants and continued to treat their associates as family. As the boys continued to grow the company, the #21st store was opened being the first dining room restaurant they had. In order for managers to receive the correct training, an In-N-Out university opened in Baldwin Park next to the first store that had ever opened. This was to allow managers to get training on the food, cleanliness, and customer service. In 1984, a Child Abuse Foundation was created. This eventually became the In-N-Out Burger Foundation. The foundation provided went to help abused children in foster care, emergency shelter and early intervention. Since then, the store has expanded to Arizona and Texas but has not opened up stores anywhere else. The company wants to stay small in order for them to be exclusive.

Over the years, In-N-Out has faced many problems that have caused the company to have a downturn. Back in August 2012,federal inspectors temporarily shut down a California meat company that provided the In-n-Out burger meat. The fed put undercover cameras in the factory, which showed animal abused and over killing. They abused the animals by putting electric prods on the cattle that didn't allow them to walk. Not only did this bring up animal abuse in the picture but people started to think about food safety. A law that was created in 2009 stated, "non-ambulatory disabled cattle are not eligible for slaughter. This is for the protection of humans. For the hospitality side of this case, the president had to get involved. He stated that he takes all the allegations seriously and promises to correct any problems that have come about. This caused In-N-Out to have temporary financial issues. With a factory being shut down temporarily, they had to bring in their meat from other factories, which were further away which caused them a lot more money. Another thing that affected them financially was the word getting around. Once people heard that the company was abusing animals, people were turned off by it. Many people stopped
