It was a beautiful, crisp fall day and I was so anxious to arrive to Mrs. Shannon's fourth grade classroom to find out my book report grade. If the class did well as a whole, Mrs. Shannon would reward us with a pizza party. This beautiful fall day turned out to be a sad day as the class did not do well and I received a disappointing C on my paper. Sadly, our class was not rewarded with a pizza party. This was just the beginning of the highs and lows I encountered through my journey with reading and writing.

I believe it is the highs and lows that teach you the valuable lessons in reading and writing. If you always succeed, how would you know where to improve and if you always failed, how would you gain the confidence to improve? In my opinion, there is always room for improvement. I felt nothing I did was good enough. At that time I did not understand constructive criticism as I do today. Meanwhile, I remember spending hours writing papers and feeling as if my fingers were going to fall off because I had to make sure that last sentence was as perfect as the first. I never did receive a perfect score in his class. This monster of a teacher actually turned out to be one of my most admired teachers in college.

It was my first year of college that I received an A in my college composition class. I contributed my perfect grade to my language arts teacher. If my language arts teacher had not of challenged me, I would not of improved to level I needed to be at for college composition. Also, I believe it takes a good teacher to challenge you and give you constructive criticism to improve . If I received perfect grades in my younger years, I would not have taken the time to strive harder.

Mrs. Shannon's class was the beginning of my journey with reading and writing. Losing out on the pizza party made me strive harder to do better on my book reports. The monster
