A. Preview the Seaman reading assignment -

This article is written by Henry Wechsler. He is a director of the college alcohol studies at Harvard. This piece was published in the Boston Globe in 1997. By reading the title and knowing what the man does , I believe this piece will contain information pertaining to how bad binge drinking is and what we can do to stop it.

B. Skim the reading-

The author's point of view on binge drinking is that it is widespread and should be stopped. He claims that binge drinking is wide spread and that college campuses are "lulled into complacency" regarding just how bad binge drinking is with college students.

C. Consider your own experience-

I went to Ball State University when I was 18 years old. While I was there I spent more time drinking then I did studying. I was a member of one of the fraternity houses and it seemed there were parties every-night, no reason needed. Instead of waking up for classes, I was attending to a hangover. By the mid of my first semester, I was on academic probation. I was unconcerned because at the time I figured this is college life drinking , parties and hot girls. It wasn't until I received my academic suspension , that I realized just how wrong I was and how much I had wasted a good education on a good time. Looking back now when I am 36 and re-doing college , I wish I had someone or something to explain that college life is not what you see in the movies and on television.

D. Summarize-

The article "Binge Drinking Must Be Stopped " by Henry Wechsler, he begins it with the tragic death of a young man named Scott Krueger, a freshman at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. The article goes on to discuss how unaware college administrators are of the problem or how "lulled into complacency" they are that as long as the problem does not seem to increase or get worse or a tragedy does not occur. He also goes on to state how un-effective campuses are when implementing solutions to the problem he calls them " partial" and explains how the root of the problem is never touched. The article goes on to state that action needs to be taken on many different fronts and by parents also who should want a safer environment for their children.
