Canada is the second larggest country by total area in the world. It has huge land area and resources, but small populations.. Therefore, the Canadian government has implemented immigration policies in order to attract more people worldwide to invest and develop a career in Canada. So Canada also is a multicultural country. According to a survey, Canada has one of the highest per-capita immigration rates in the world. 25,000of new immigration come to Canada every year (Staistics Canada, 2010). As to this group of immigrators, the majority of them integrate into the Canadian society and start their new life. . On the other hand, some of them find it hard and might choose not to assimilate. The causes of this phenomenon are variable, which mainly include language problem, culture problem, and enviroment problem.

First of all, no one can deny that language is the basic tool of social communication. It is the key to delivering message, and exchanging emotions and ideas. It is impossible to speak with others without a same language. However, English is not the first language of everyone, so some people have to spend a lot of time to learn English. Studying language is a very hard and long way to success. It takes years and years to practice. In this long study process, many people give up, they choose speak their own language rather than English. In addition, foreign accents influence the way of communication even in the same language. The foreigners usually carry an accent which is sometimes hardly understood. For example, the teacher always has to ask international student several times to figure out what they are trying to say due to the accent problem.

Secondly, the cultural difference is another factor should be blamed in terms of assimilation in the Canadian society. There are some big differences between the cultures of Canada and other countries, such as food, clothes, etiquette, music, etc. For example, the number 13 means unluck in west culture . Whereas Chinese are fond of number 3 due to its pronunciation. Moreover, people tend to stay in a group with their familiars. For example , as I am an international student, I spend more time with students from my country rather than local student, because we have similar background, social beliefs, cultural values, attitudes, etc. That is the same reason why we always can find people hanging around with the same color and ethnic group.
