COACHING AND MENTORING PAPER

This Coaching and Mentoring paper is the result of the discussion and analysis of the Work Preference Indicator's results and coaching and mentoring sessions for 3 working adults: Emiliano Lafalla, Cecilia Espín and Rafael Mora and its purpose is to identify their strengths and opportunities that they can improve upon.

The approach i used to conduct the coaching and mentoring sessions was: a) Asked the individuals to take the Work Preference Indicator test and mail me the results along with their career compatibility analysis. b) Had a 45 min-1 hour session with each of them reviewing their results, analyzing and discussing each individual factor identifying strengths and opportunities, and c) Analysis and discussion of their career compatibility with their current jobs, and the opportunity that they might have in other fields according to their preferences and skills.

Emiliano Lafalla

Emiliano Lafalla is a 37 year old Economist that was born in Argentina. He works as a Financial Planning Manager at an Electricity Distribution Company. Emiliano seemed very cooperative when I asked him to complete the WPI and mailed me the results within 10 minutes. He reviewed the results himself and wanted to discuss them right away. This attitude reflected to me that he likes to be helpful for others, and I confirmed this in his WPI results. Four days later, we had the coaching session, at his office, around 4:30 Pm in a non stressful work day. The Major factors for Emiliano according to the WPI are as follows:

According to WPI's results, Emiliano's Grand type is a Upward mobile analyst - Technical Expert.

Emiliano's main strengths are: He is a result oriented person with great technical skills; he likes to understand how things work, is very analytical and does not take things for granted; He likes to work with factual data, look for trends and prefers to learn from manuals and verifiable sources since he is a visual learner.

He prefers to work in teams; He likes to take the lead on teams or projects. He is a person who wants to progress in his career and he is very flexible. For him is very important what others think of him, and he likes to help others.

Emiliano's opportunities for improvement are: He does not like to be closely monitored because this could get him frustrated, since he makes his own schedule for work; and he is a part of a team he likes to stand out, this is something valuable but on occasions he agreed that he may focus more on individual results rather than the team results. He prefers to take moderate risks.

I see Emiliano as a high self-monitoring individual. According to Robbins and Judge (2010)1 individuals high in self-monitoring show considerable adaptability in adjusting their behavior to external situational factors; Evidence indicates high self-monitors pay closer attention to the behavior or others and are more capable of conforming than are low self-monitors, they also receive better performance ratings, are more likely to emerge as leaders, and show less commitment to their organizations.

I reviewed with Emiliano his career compatibility (See appendix 1) and the 7 most compatible careers were: 1) Transportation and logistics management he told me that logistics management, specifically cargo transportations is a career that has always been very interesting to him since it involves a lot of coordination and there's a lot of regulation involved. 2) Business Administration, 3) Finance, 4) Accounting and 6) Management, he has a lot of involvement with each of these careers in his current job as a Financial Planning Manager, which is a Job that he enjoys to do. 6) Criminal justice he finds it very interesting. He told me that about 6 years ago he tracked down a taxi driver in Buenos Aires that tricked him with $150 dollars with just the driver's last name, the phonebook and a story of a $200 dollar change given to him by mistake. 7) Emergency and disaster management, it's not by chance that he is currently a member of the emergency brigade in the office. He has also taken first aid and resuscitation courses. I appointed to him that he might have skills for marketing, information technology and hospitality management, and he told me that only certain aspects of these careers seemed interesting to him. On the other hand, Legal studies and Political science were of interest to him; he sees himself as a political person and likes to understand the extent of the law. He was surprised that his compatibility with psychology was low, since he comes from a family of psychologists. Emiliano has also worked as a Economy teacher in a University in Buenos Aires, Argentina. He asked me why this career was not shown in his compatibility report, since he was very good at it. I told him that he may be good at it, but that it will better for him if he focuses in taking advantage of his major strengths.

Cecilia Espin

Cecilia Espin is 36 years old. She has a Business Administration major and she was born in the Dominican Republic. She works as a Treasury Manager at an Electricity Generation Company. Cecilia seemed cooperative when I asked her to complete the WPI and mailed me the results a couple hours later. Two days later, we had the coaching session, at her office, around 1:00 Pm during lunch break. The Major factors for Cecilia according to the WPI are as follows:

According to WPI's results, Cecilia's Grand type is a Goal oriented thinker - A Team Strategist.

Cecilia's main strengths are: She is a result oriented person. She likes to get things done, to take the lead and prefers to not be dependent on others; she is a visual learner, she prefers to learn from manuals, established procedures, books, etc. She is an organized person, but she may be flexible if needed. She can be an asset on a team and may also work independently; she prefers to work with data.

Cecilia's
