Introduction

Managing staff performance by coaching has gained in popularity in recent years, but how many people managers really understand what a coach looks like? Increasingly, the modern world requires leadership, rather than (just) management. The world is changing too quickly for us to rely on employees doing what they are told or following procedures. There may be nobody around to tell them what to do and the procedures may be out of date. Indeed, the particular circumstances might never have arisen before.

So we need leaders who can create a context in which they can empower their staff to make their own 'intelligent' decisions. Management skills of leaders now include coaching, mentoring, delegation, appraisal.

When managing staff performance by coaching, applying the Coach Model will help simplify the steps both new and tenured people managers need to focus on to build a solid coaching foundation and ultimately to see a performance improvement from their team.

Leadership

Leadership is the process of directing the behavior of others toward the accomplishment of some common objectives.

Leadership is a way of focusing and motivating a group to enable them to achieve their aims. It also involves being accountable and responsible for the group as a whole.

Purpose of leadership - A leader should:

* provide continuity and momentum

* be flexible in allowing changes of direction

Ideally, a leader should be a few steps ahead of their team, but not too far for the team to be able to understand and follow them.

Skills Needed

Leaders must have a wide range of skills, techniques and strategies. These include:

* Planning

* Communication skills

* Organization

* Awareness of the wider environment in which the team operates.

Different Ideas of Leadership

* There is a debate about whether leadership should be concentrated in one person or distributed among members of the team.

* Traditionally, a permanent team leader would be appointed by more senior levels of management or elected by the group. This technique relies on the assumption that one single person has all the strengths required.
