Sexual dysfunctions are oftentimes the result of certain sexual customs and practices. These dysfunctions include psychological and physical dysfunctions which can be caused by various factors. An example of one of these factors could include religion. Some Christian religions, for example, have strict guidelines in regards to sexual practices. These include practicing absence before marriage and having limited sexual partners in a lifetime (Belief 7). Such practices can lead to guilt, which causes a psychological sexual disorder as the individual's sexual behavior is affected. He or she may feel guilt whenever they have sex due to religious reasons, interfering with their performance and experience. This kind of occurrence can be a serious condition because the individual will not enjoy sex and his or her partner will be negatively affected.

Another example of how cultural customs can lead to sexual dysfunctions is the empowerment of men in some societies. In Middle Eastern societies, for example, women are subject to their husbands at all times (Muslim Woman 5). Therefore, when the husband desires sex, the female must consent whether she is in the mood or not. This can lead to serious psychological sexual dysfunctions because the woman is unable to enjoy sex and instead associates sex with her experience of being forced into it. It may take an individual years or even a lifetime to overcome certain sexual fears or negative associations. This is the same with any kind of sexual disorder. There are many other examples where cultural customs around the world have led to sexual dysfunction.

To reduce the incidents of these sexual dysfunctions, it is important for societies and governments to spread awareness. They should inform their communities about the negative effects of the cultural customs. They should also set up support organizations which act as a retreat from sexual pressures. For example, with the Middle Eastern situation, shelters would assist in helping women rebuild their confidence and feelings toward sex. In addition, these programs will point out some of the detrimental practices which are prevalent in each society which will eventually cause people to do away with those customs. Awareness is really one of the best ways to overcome culture and community pressures as individuals often fall prey to pressures simply because every other member practices the same tradition. If the government as well as the communities help to promote awareness about sexual dysfunctions and how they are caused, individuals will feel more accepted and supported within their community.
