Reflective Statement

An elective is a subject which one takes to enhance their overall process of learning. Cultural studies was the most suitable elective which gave us an in depth view of the reasons and the causes that led to the current existing scenario of fashion. It not only made us understand the whole working of this industry but also gave reasons as to why did they adopt this particular way. Through all the presentations I better understood various aspects of fashion. As this subject is highly descriptive, it was important to have visual references which our tutor had in plenty. The images that we were shown were a brilliant mix of the conventional, the unconventional, and the absurd. The topics which were discussed during the lessons were unbiased and open. A broader take on the past and the present. There were no prejudiced opinions of what is wrong and what is right everyone was entitled to their own views.

Learning for me became easy as I am a visual person. My visual perception is stronger than my reading. Although I love reading, the innumerable visual examples were of great help. Also the topics of the lecture were not the usual history related boring ones. Our tutor made sure that the top is of the past but in todays context. That made us relate to the topic which made learning more interesting. Instead of being listeners we took active participation in sharing our views about the topic. The workshops were constructed in a way that made us use what we've learnt and give our own take on it. This helped us form views and opinions about the various occurrences in the field of fashion in the past rather than just being spectators.

Also the wide array of referencing books helped immensely in the course of my study. The London College of Fashion has one of the best libraries and I was fortunate enough to be exposed to their vast collection of books. But book hunting was made easier by the reading list provided .The books in the list proved of much help while writing the essay.

Overall this course has given me an overall understanding of the past, present and may be the future of fashion. Along with the other courses I guess it's important to know where all the existing trends come from, the reasons behind the world of fashion today. Thus, Cultural Studies has helped me understand the intricacies of fashion.
