Sub-Human

According to Jewish Virtual Library.org over 5,933,900 Jews were killed in the Holocaust. But in order to kill all the Jews, the Germans had to first make them look sub-human. By doing so, the Germans were able to take away their pride, faith, and hope. It made it easier for the Nazis to put them in concentration camps and kill them. Because of the Nazis, Elie Wiesel loses everything: his pride, his faith, his hope, his humanity, and most of all, his family.

Elie got invaded by the Nazis, they took everything he had. For the Nazis to do so, they blamed the Jews for all of the problems in the world. Made Jews look like terrible people. Therefor the Germans were able to take over the house Elie grew up in, and is making him and his family move to Jewish ghettos. The Germans took all their jewels and belongings, leaving them nothing to show for themselves. Even took their clothes and shoes. Eventually they would be taken to the concentration camps in Germany. In the concentration camps, the Jews were barely fed, extra rations of food were to die for. On his way to Buchenward the Germans would throw bread into the carts, to watch them kill each other for a little extra food, for amusement. Ultimately he is feeling shame and also is losing pride in life and in living.

Elie Wiesel is losing his faith in god, family, and humanity through the experiences he is going through at the concentration camps. On the Jewish holiday of Yom Kippur, the Jews would fast and not work. Elie is forced to work. He also ate double his rations in food. He is struggling physically and mentally for life and no longer believes there is a God. Elie is working hard to save himself and asks God many times to help him and have mercy on him. He didn't know how such a powerful God could not intervene and have mercy. After his faith is lost, he "felt a great void opening". (69) That Void in his heart is filled with Hitler. Because, he was the only one that ever kept his promises, that work will set you free.

The Jewish belief in ever surviving the holocaust, is growing smaller. Because of the Germans, his humanity was gone.
