Behavior and Communication

In your readings one will learn the organizational culture of the company, 3M. One will know the types of communication this organization uses for internal and external communication, along with the extent to which communication is determined by 3M's culture. After reading one should know if the espoused values of this organization align with its enacted values.

First, organizational culture is considered a powerful force of shared meanings held by individuals that distinguishes one organization from another. A company's well-being and success is a result of this, whether it is the glue holding individuals together, or a compass providing the direction (Robbins & Judge, 2009).

3M is a diversified company, established in the early 1900s that never stops inventing. This Worldwide company is well known for its innovation to helping millions of people. The company gets it inspiration by listening to its customers; therefore new products are always invented. Most of the products created today are from 3M, such as scotch tape, sand paper, scouring pads, post it notes, which are office supplies. This organization is known for helping in many markets worldwide. This culture began with William McKnight.

William McKnight was an American businessman who served his entire career in the 3M Corporation. He joined the company in 1907, and advanced his way to chairman of the board in

1949. William developed the company's culture that is still in use today. As the business grew, they believed in delegating responsibilities, and encouraging men and women to exercise their own initiative to do their job in their own way. Yes, mistakes were made, but far less than if told how to do the job. This requires honesty, dedication, and research from each individual internally and externally, 3M can continue to grow to meet the public's expectations (McKnight Principles, 2012).

3M is committed to legal and ethical business conduct and when combined with the quality and performance, which in return has created a powerful successful business. Individuals are encouraged to use innovation and research to improve and invent new products, and to satisfy the customers with innovative technology and superior quality, value and service. The employees are noticed for their values, talents, and leadership but also respect the social and physical environment around the world.

Last, 3M firmly believes in keeping communication open for the employees and public by meetings with neighbors, surveys, and newsletters. Honesty, integrity, and respect is required at all times from each individual. This requires the diversified company to hire employees with the ability to be self-starters with an open mind.
