In my opinion ChoicePoint acted ethically in response to fraudulent spoofing attack. Keeping in mind the severity of the crime and the potential damage it could cause to its customers, choicePoint decided to approach law enforcement to handle the situation. Later, it established a hotline for customers whose data has been compromised and provided them with one-year credit monitoring service.

ChoicePoint acted wisely in approaching the authorities first before contacting the customers, which allowed LAPD to conduct full investigation. I am sure law enforcement officer's were very pleased by ChoicePoint's decision to come forward with the issue and letting them investigate it. The investigation performed by LAPD can be very useful in preventing such crimes in future and also an eye opener for other companies in similar industry.

The fact that ChoicePoint is facing a class-action suit proves that consumers and investors were not happy with what happened. As a consumer, I would be worried and wonder how ChoicePoint got my personal information in first place and what all information about me is stored in their database and how/why it is provided to their customers.

In February 2008, ChoicePoint was purchased by Reed Elsevier and got merged with LexisNexis. According to the new website it appears that ChoicePoint management has learnt its lessons and have enhanced their privacy and security settings to avoid such mishaps again.
