Depression has the name common cold of the psychological disorders and the number one reason why people seek medical help. A depressed mood is a response to past and current loss but can also mean a threat of a future loss. There are three factors that can lead to one's depression which are genetics, biologic, and environment. As we know for environment, it can be brought on by stressful situations like losing a job, divorce, or something disruptive to our senses.

Men and women differ significantly when it comes to depression. According to our text, women are more common is learning helplessness than men (Brannon, 2011). The report of feeling more overwhelmed is in high percent of women entering school than men. The women's high risk of depression is lead to believe by their trend to overthink, along with being able to recall more experiences than men. The gender difference in emotional memory may feed women's greater rumination over negative events and explain why fewer men than women report being frequently overwhelmed (Brannon, 2011). Women tend to dwell on the problem which amplifies the depression. Men were found to have higher rate of depression if their testosterone levels were higher. Men and women can experience the similar feeling of depression but handle it differently. Gender differences in depression are a product of the ways in which women and men typically deal with distress and negative mood (Brannon, 2011).

When coping with depression men and women have differences. Women are more likely to open up with their feels and to get help from a professional than men. Men tend to be more resilient to opening up about how they feel or what they are going through. Men with depression are more likely to act out in violence, and abuse. As for the prognosis, women have a better result because they are more willing to talk about how they feel. It is more likely that men do not get treated because of the denial of having a mental illness might affect their male ego.

Men and women with depression have several options for treating the issue. Depression can be treated not only with medication that may cause side effects but a simple change in the lifestyle can make a difference. Studies have shown that exercise has reduced depression symptoms in men and women. Lifestyles in men, like spending most of their time avoiding activities that make them feel overwhelmed and join in light anxiety activities such as in playing sports, watching TV, and partying reduce anxiety.
