The article "Fitness of Escherichia coli during Urinary Tract Infection Requires Gluconeogenesis and the TCA Cycle" discusses the E. coli factors that leads to urinary tract infection. Scientists have chosen this field of study because of the rapid resistance of antibiotics rising from E. coli. The majority of Urinary Tract Infections are caused by E. coli infections and this had been a big financial burden for the healthcare system as it costs excess money. Findings suggest that peptides and amino acids are the primary carbon source for E. coli during infection of the urinary tract. This article proposes the central metabolic pathways of bacteria that could be considered critical components of virulence for pathogenic microbes. The hypothesis for this article is E. coli, which causes most urinary tract infections, utilizes peptides as a preferred carbon source in vivo and requires some, but not all, of the central metabolic pathways to infect the urinary tract. Enterohemorrhagic E. coli requires similar carbon metabolic pathways, however when facing limiting sugars due to consumptions by other bacteria, Enterohemorrhagic E. coli may switch from glycolytic to gluconeogenic substrates to sustain

growth in the intestine. The major technique used for this article "used a combination of

comparative proteomics and systematic disruption of central metabolism to identify pathways that are required for UPEC fitness in vivo." Culturing the uropathogenic E. coli in the human urnine has partially mimiced the urinary tract environment and has proven to be a useful tool to identify bacterial genes and proteins involved in unirary tract infection. The strategy used for determining protein expression profile of E. coli CFT073 during growth in human urine is compared that with bacterial class cultured in iron-limited medium to uncover proteins involved in processes other than iron metabolism.
