Disciplining a child is one of the most important roles of a parent, and perhaps one of the most difficult, but healthy discipline is part of a comforting family environment. Effective discipline at home provides a foundation for self-discipline throughout life. It helps child grow up to be happy and well-adjusted. Effective and positive discipline teaches and guides children. It doesn't just force them to obey.

Definition of physical discipline - Any behavior involving the use of physical contact, force, or restrictions in movement to control or correct a child's behavior.

Q1. What method of physical discipline do parents employ besides spanking?

Answer- There is wide range of physical discipline, but smacking being the most commonly used and most frequently mentioned. Other physical discipline employed by parents are listed below:

o Licking soap

o Carrying heavy books

o Being thrown on the bed

o Ear pulled

o Slap on face, head or back

o Tap on back of the hands

o Smacking with an open hand

o Smacking a child in the head and neck area

o Using implements such as a wooden spoon or belt, canes, sticks, belts or slippers

Q2. Delineate between acceptable and unacceptable physical discipline?

Answer- Discipline and punishment are accepted as part of learning process, when they are delivered in fair and appropriate ways. The occasional use of mild physical discipline is acceptable, if used in combination with positive methods of discipline, such as praise or rewards for good behavior. Always try all other options first and only use mild physical discipline when all else fails. Do not cross the limits of mild physical discipline which is

totally unacceptable such as shoving, shaking, grabbing, and keeping a child in an uncomfortable position for a prolonged period, hitting or physical contact that results in injury, bruises or marks.

Q3. Justify why, or why not, physical discipline should be banned as it now is in 11 countries around the world?

Answer- Physical discipline is not exactly illegal as long as it is not abuse. However, that is the problem with physical discipline or spanking and that is when does it become abuse? Too many parents have gone too far when they were angry and spanked their child too long or too hard. Because
