This story tells the life of Matilda De Loisel, who is married to a clerk in the Department of Education. She was very miserable and unhappy because of her social status and lack to obtain materialistic belongings. One day Mr. Loisel and his wife where invited to a very exclusive party, but Matilda refuse to assist because she didn't have the right clothes and jewelry. Mr. Loisel felt sorry for his wife, went in to the family savings and bought a very nice dress so Matilda can look radiant for the party, and the necklace she borrowed from her wealthy friend.

This necklace change her life because she lost it, and turned her in to slave that does heavy housework and cleaning to recover the money she had lost. This hard work made her realize the greedy position she was and give her another way to look at life.

The main theme of the "necklace" by Mauppasant is that for some people is important to have a social status and by pretending someone you are not could bring many consequences. Matilda was born in a middle class family, however she is miserable and unhappy because of her economic situation. When she loses the necklace she is force to work harder and suffers for many years in order to repay the cost of the necklace only to find out the diamonds are were fake. Other theme could be Matilda's greediness and her actions can give us a good lesson.

There are many ways to interpret this story. I think the tone of the narrator tell us if Matilda would tell the truth since the beginning she would have save herself many years of pain and suffering. "Yes. You not notice it, even, did you? They were exactly alike? And she smiled with proud and naive joy. Mme. Forest, much moved, took her by both hands: "Oh, my por Matilda. But mine were false. At most they wre worth five hundresfrancs." (Clugston, R. W. (2010) . "The Necklace" simbolices irony, health and misery, gives her a social status and this shows her admiration for the rich class and considers them to be happy and perfect, but this materialistic attitude relies only on appearance, ironically is the cause of her fall into poverty. The main characters are Matilda de Loisel she is pretty, ambitious, greedy. Mr. Loisel is a hard worker, loves his wife and wants to please Matilda.

Ms. Forester, Matilda's friend, has a lot of many.

Some selective literary elements could affect the narrative theme, all depends in how the plot and conflict is transmitted to us. For example, the narrator describes Matilda's desires and unhappiness, it is very obvious by the way she is describe to us she is a greedy person, and not a person that wants to better her self, the only thing she cares is what people thinks. The Factors in analyzing the characters is also very important in the narrative theme matilda's physical appearance and motivation can make a difference in the story.
