Lab Stuff and Their Meanings

1. Evaporating dish - used to heat and evaporate liquids.

2. Crucible with cover - hold small amounts of a substance to be heated and dehydrated. Made of porcelain or ceramic, they can withstand high temperatures.

3. Pipette - used in a laboratory to transport and/or measure a specific volume of liquid.

4. Crucible tongs - used to hold crucibles and crucible lids.

5. Tripod - has a gauze heat proof mesh placed onto it and beakers and other items which require heating are placed onto it, a bunsen burner is then placed under it to provide the heat.

6. Medicine drop - used to orally administer medication.

7. Wire gauze - covers the support ring to provide a flat surface for beakers and other glassware, usually when heating them.

8. Acid burette - used in laboratory procedures for accurate fluid dispensing and measurement. commonly used in titrations to measure precisely how much liquid is used.

9. Cobalt glass - It is also used as an optical filter inflame tests to filter out the yellow flame caused by the contamination of sodium, and expand the ability to see violet and blue hues.

10. Beaker - is a simple container for stirring, mixing and heating liquids commonly used in many laboratories.

11. Funnels - can be used with filter paper to filter fluids. They can also be used for transferring fluids.

12. Magnifying glass - is a convex lens which is used to produce a magnified image of an object.

13. Test tube brush - cleans tube so one substance won't effect a second substance used in the same test tube.

14. Wing top - is used to produce a broad, flat, pan-shaped flame.

15. Burette clamps - used to hold burettes, test tubes, flasks, and other glassware on the ring stand.

16. Clay triangle - rest on support rings and are used to hold funnels during filtering or crucibles during heating.

17. Test tube holders - are used to temporarily hold and move test tubes.

18. Bunsen burners - produce a hot flame used to heat, dehydrate, or sterilize substances in the lab. Ours run on natural gas.

19. Stirring rod - is a piece of laboratory equipment used to mix chemicals and liquids for laboratory purposes. They are usually made of solid glass, about the thickness and slightly longer than a drinking straw.

20. Magnet - is a material or object that produces a magnetic field.
